RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
