Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
