Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
