Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
